The lack of awareness of the issue seems to be key, as it's hard to imagine an elderly person taking their own life. Partly, because we have tremendous respect and gratitude for our elders. They always come first in all that we do in community life. I have only heard of one case in a local nearby community and that was shocking enough. I assumed it was just an isolated case. I often hear elders say when a young person commits suicide that "they have lost their spirit". I think this is the case when it happens to an older adult as well.
